Recovering
I trained for my marathon using internet tools a free guide from active.com and different articles from running magazines. I’m recovering the same way.
I’m not sure if my 2 mile walk yesterday actually counts as a workout since I walk a mile to the subway and home every day for work. What I do know is those 2 miles were very painful. What was more painful? Walking down the subway stairs. For some reason (I imagine it has something to do with the muscles used) walking up stairs posed less of a problem.
The amazing thing is that today (3 days after the marathon) I feel A LOT better then I did yesterday. I guess my point is: one day of rest can make such a big difference in the way my muscles and body feel. I understood why there were rest days before and after my long runs in training, but now I really understand.
On a side note it was one of the most depressing walks to work as I was the slow walker and had to let everyone pass me on the sidewalk, when usually I am able to make a game out of seeing how many people I can pass while getting to the subway.

My First Marathon
I guess the background is just as important as the fact that I finished. So as I sit here typing two days after my marathon (still pretty sore and unable to do an actual squat without wanting to cry) I guess I’ll start at the beginning.
My initial motivation came after watching the NYC Marathon in 2006, before that the most I had ever run was around 3 miles and it included walking and a very slow pace. I’ve never been overweight so I wasn’t motivated by the desire to loose pounds but instead to stay busy and ultimately challenge myself. I completed my first triathlon in May 2007 with two of my best friends - 1.2 mile swim, 91 miles biking and a 10k later I was hooked.
I began training for the marathon around September giving myself time to start logging miles and realizing that I could actually do this. I improved my time from a struggling 11 or 12 minute mile to a very comfortable longer run at 10 minute miles or smaller (4 mile) runs at around 8 1/2 min miles. If you told me a year ago that I would be able to do this, I never would have believed you.
January 13, 2008 (6 days after my 24th birthday) I was in Phoenix at the start line of the marathon, my best friend next to me with matching shirts that said “Marathon Virgin” on the back. I couldn’t have been more scared. Not because I wasn’t prepared, not because I didn’t know I would make it, because it was the first time doing this.
Some things I learned for next time and some things that worked well:
- bring warmups and warm clothes for the start line because it is cold in the morning (even in Arizona..even when you think you’re used to running in new york’s cold)
- bring a cell phone so that you can find your friends/family at the end of the race - carrying it won’t be as bad as exhaustively trying to find the people waiting for you - trust me I wish I took mine
- save something for the end because when everyone is yelling for you to “finish up strong” you want to be able to cross the finish line — running!
- Listen to your body
- If you wear contacts bring an extra with you (most nike shorts have a little key pocket that would hold this perfectly) …mine tore at the start line and I ran the first 13 miles with one contact in until my family could bring me a spare
- Hydrate
- If you’re flying to a race give yourself a day to adjust after the flight and if possible go for a little run so you know what the air/weather is like
- Wear a shirt with your name on it because people cheering your name is soooo motivating!
- Have fun, especially if it’s your first marathon because it will be your personal best no matter what - - might as well enjoy it.
I’m doing the half marathon in Austin in February and I guess I caught the bug because I’m already looking for more marathons to do in preparation for the 1/2 Iron Man in Santa Cruz that I’ll be doing in September.
My time was 5 hours and 26 minutes which isn’t fast at all, but completing it was a great feeling and now I can shoot for a better time.
The thing I loved most wasn’t crossing the finish line, it was the sense of community I felt while running with other people. It is the feeling that these people know how 26.2 miles feels and we were all supporting each other, encouraging each other to finish - even if each person is running for themselves or their own personal goals - - we’re all running together.
